Repair? or Replace?

Tyre repairable section

Can your tyre be repaired?

Saving a punctured tyre largely depends on how you respond when the puncture first occurs. A common mistake customers make is continuing to drive while the tyre pressure is low. Driving on a tyre with very little pressure causes the sidewall to heat up excessively, leading to irreversible damage. This is what often results in a blowout.

If you can identify what caused your puncture, refer to our image above to see which part of the tyre is affected. If the object that caused the puncture is in the red area or on the sidewall, you will unfortunately need a new tyre. However, if the object is in the green area, there is a high probability we can safely repair your tyre.

Reasons why your tyre may need replacing

Nail too close to edge to repair

Puncture Too Close to the Shoulder or on the Sidewall

A puncture near the shoulder or on the sidewall of a tyre is considered unrepairable because these areas are crucial to the tyre's structural integrity. The shoulder and sidewall undergo significant flexing and pressure during driving, and any damage in these zones weakens the tyre, increasing the likelihood of blowouts or failure. Repairs in these areas are prone to fail due to the constant flexing of the sidewall. Unlike the tread, the sidewall lacks the necessary thickness and reinforcement to support a durable repair. For safety reasons, a new tyre is always recommended if a puncture occurs in these critical areas.

Cut in tyre

Puncture Caused by Split or Cut

If your tyre has a cut or split in the tread that exposes the internal cords or structure, it's no longer safe to repair, and you'll need to replace the tyre. Driving on a damaged tyre like this compromises its integrity, increasing the risk of a blowout. Also a cut or split that exposes the tyres internal cords is a MOT failure

Tyre sidewall damage - Ring of Death

Tyre has been Driven on Low Pressure - Ring of Death

Driving on a deflated or under-inflated tyre can quickly cause irreversible sidewall damage. In fact, it only takes a few meters of driving to compromise the tyre's sidewall. Since the sidewall is the most vulnerable and weakest part of the tyre, any visible damage or signs of wear will almost always require a tyre replacement.

Commonly referred to in the trade as the 'Ring of Death,' this is a ring around the sidewall caused by excessive heat, typically found on tyres that have been driven while flat. If this is visible on your tyre's sidewall, it is recommended to replace the tyre.

worn tyre below 3mm

Is Your Tyre Worn? We Only Repair Tyres with a Minimum Tread Depth of 3mm.

If a punctured tyre has less than 3mm of tread depth, it is not recommended to repair it. Tyres with lower tread depth offer reduced grip, especially in wet conditions, increasing the risk of skidding and accidents. Additionally, repairing a tyre with limited tread can compromise its structural integrity, making it more susceptible to future damage. For optimal safety and performance, replacing the tyre is the best option.
